Pets make great friends, and India has of course a longstanding tradition of ahimsa or non-violence towards all living creatures; but when you observe rats using oxygen-supply pipes as their dwellings at the premier medical facility in the second-most-populous country in the world it does give you pause. (And it makes you wonder, too, whether the treatment you may be undergoing there might not be critically undermined.) Yet this and many other diversions were all routinely experienced by Virraj Sorhvi during his seven and a half months' stay at the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, one of only ten medical institutions in India accredited by the U.S.-based Joint Commission International, purportedly a guarantee of highest standards. In the present video a cockroach is captured while paying a visit to Virraj's bed bright and early one fine morning in January 2008, before five o'clock in fact. It and its friends — or were they perchance relatives — returned many times, and at all times of night and day, too, infesting the patient's bed and bedside stand (together with its medicine cabinet). Chalk it up to one of the traditional delights of India? (The Encyclopædia Britannica states that the cockroach has "Asiatic origins" from which it has been distributed by vehicles of commerce to "all the temperate regions".)

British Newsreel. March 21, 1940.HMNZS Achilles was a Leander class cruiser which served with the Royal New Zealand Navy in World War II. She became famous for her part in the Battle of the River Plate, alongside HMS Ajax and HMS Exeter.She was the second of five ships of the Leander class light cruisers, designed as effective follow-ons to the York class. Upgraded to Improved Leander class, she was capable of carrying an aircraft, becoming the first ship to carry a Supermarine Walrus although this was removed before the war.Achilles was originally built for the Royal Navy, and was commissioned as HMS Achilles on October 10, 1933. She served with the Royal Navy's New Zealand Division from March 31, 1937 up to the creation of the Royal New Zealand Navy, into which she was transferred in September 1941, renamed as HMNZS Achilles. Her crew was approximately 60% from New Zealand.On the outbreak of the Second World War, Achilles started patrolling the west coast of South America looking for German merchant ships, but by 22 October 1939 she had arrived at the Falkland Islands, where she was assigned to the South American Division under Commodore Henry Harwood and allocated to Force G (HMS Exeter and Cumberland).In the early morning of 1939-12-13 a force consisting of Achilles, HMS Ajax and Exeter detected smoke on the horizon, which was confirmed at 06:16 to be a pocket battleship, thought to be Admiral Scheer but which turned out to be the Admiral Graf Spee. A fierce battle ensued, at a range of approximately 20 km (22,000 yards). Achilles took some damage: four crew were killed, and her captain, W. E. Parry was injured. In the exchange of fire 36 of Graf Spee's crew were killed. The range reduced to about four miles (7 km) at around 07:15 and Admiral Graf Spee broke off the engagement around 07:45 to head for the neutral harbour of Montevideo which she entered at 22:00 that night, having been pursued by Achilles and Ajax all day. She was forced by international law to leave with 72 hours. Faced with what he believed to be overwhelming odds, the captain of the Admiral Graf Spee, Hans Langsdorff, scuttled his ship rather than risk the lives of his crew.Following the battle, Achilles returned to Auckland, New Zealand on 23 February 1940, where she was refitted until June. After Japan entered the war, she escorted troop convoys, then joined the ANZAC squadron in the south west Pacific. While operating off New Georgia with U.S. forces, she was hit by a bomb on X turret on 5 January 1943. She was repaired at Portsmouth from April 1943 to May 1944, during which X turret was replaced by four two-pounders. Sent to the Eastern Fleet, Achilles then joined the British Pacific Fleet (Task Force 57) in May 1945 for final operations in the Pacific.After the war, Achilles was returned to the Royal Navy at Sheerness, Kent, England on 17 September 1946. She was then sold to the Indian Navy and recommissioned on 5 July 1948 as INS Delhi. She remained in service until decommissioned for scrap at Bombay on 30 June 1978. As part of the scrapping her Y turret was removed and given as a gift to the New Zealand government, it is now on display at the entrance of Devonport RNZN Base in Auckland.

The custodial remand of Dr Rajesh Talwar, prime suspect in the murder of his daughter Arushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj, ends today (May 30) and his bail plea also comes up for hearing.
Meanwhile Noida Police sources have told TIMES NOW that many inconsistencies have emerged in Arushi's mother Nupur Talwar's statements to the media.
In an exclusive interview to TIMES NOW on 28 May 2008, Nupur Talwar had narrated her version of the events of May 16, the day Arushi was found brutally murdered in her room. Nupur Talwar had said in the interview that she and her husband both rushed into their daughter's room to find her dead. She also said she heard nothing untoward that night before discovering her daughter's death.
A day after the interview, Delhi police sources point out the first glaring contradiction: If Nupur Talwar didn't hear any strange noises that night, why did she run into Arushi's room?
Extracts from Nupur Talwar's interview to TIMES NOW:
TIMES NOW: Who found the body first?
Nupur: We walked, rather ran into the room together, we ran after the other.
TIMES NOW: Did you both see the body together?
Nupur: It's not easy for me to keep talking like this.
TIMES NOW: Did you hear anything strange that night?
Nupur: Nothing strange at all. If I had heard something abnormal, I would have reacted. There was nothing out of the normal that I heard that night.
The police say Nupur Talwar had also told them she and her husband discovered Arushi's body together. But in the FIR Rajesh Talwar states he found the body first. The two statements clearly contradict each other.
There are more discrepancies. Giving yet another version of events, the sources say, Nupur Talwar had earlier told police she woke up to the sound of the door bell and then saw Arushi lying in a pool of blood when she went to wake her.
The defence counsel for the Talwars rubbish these inconsistencies implying a desperate police force is now clutching at straws.
But what is undeniable is that there are a large number of loose ends and gaping holes in the testimony and even police theories made public so far. For now there seems to be no end in sight in the double murder case.

Video highlights of my tour around Northern India.
In January 2008 I went to India to attend my friend Raghav's traditional Indian wedding. I then joined Intrepid Travels "Slowly down the Ganges" tour which took me to all the major sites of Northern India and Rajasthan.
Some of the places I visited on the tour included Jama Masjid Mosque, A Sikh Temple, Connaught Place, Karol Bagh and the Red fort in Delhi. Mizapur before boarding our boats and sailing three days down the river Ganges camping on its banks at night.
We spent a further three days in in the holy city of Varanasi watching all the religious ceremonies on the banks before getting an overnight train to Agra were we saw the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort as well as a carpet factory.
In Jaipur we visited the observatory, Wind Palace and City Palace as well as the Amber Fort and Water Palace and a charity organisation called Ladli that looks after homeless children.
We then took a bus and jeep ride to get to Roopangarh Fort were we lived like Maharajas for a night. We then went to Pushkar were we went on a two day camel safari into the desert as well as getting blessed at the holy lake.

Rubbishing rumours of growing unease between the Indian Prime Minister -- Manmohan Singh -- and the UPA chairperson -- Sonia Gandhi -- highly placed sources have told TIMES NOW that the Prime Minister has Sonia Gandhi's firm backing on the N-deal issue. The move implies that if the Left doesn't soften its stand on the nuke issue, the nation could be headed for an early election.
In 24-hours, the nation will know what the Left will force upon the country - the Nuclear Deal or snap polls.
During the last few days, there was a growing speculation that the PM had gone against the Congress party president -- Sonia Gandhi over the issue of N-deal. However, highly placed sources have told TIMES NOW that there was no doubt in Sonia Gandhi's mind on this score, especially after the PM told her that it would be difficult for him to attend G-8 Summit without a firm decision on the N-deal.
In fact, despite the urgent pleas from allies, Sonia Gandhi has not wavered and has backed Manmohan Singh on the issue of nuke deal.
Why is the Congress backing the PM?
The moot question is why the Congress is backing PM. The theories that are doing the rounds are that the party cannot risk losing face so close to the general elections, if the PM quits over the deal. The Congress also believes that the party might face an adverse impact in the general elections if the government collapses at the eleventh hour.
With Sonia backing the PM, and the Left not backing down, the meeting on Wednesday (June 25) could spell the beginning of the end of UPA rule.
Pawar, SP keep options open
NCP leader Sharad Pawar has supported the N-deal but does not want to lose the Left's support. Pawar is of the view that if there is to be a parting of the UPA and the Left it must not be bitter. Pawar's stand comes after he met CPM general secretary Prakash Karat after his meeting with Sonia Gandhi last night.
Sharad Pawar evasive on N-deal
Sharad Pawar has been touted as the mediator between the Left and the Congress, but the Agriculture minister speaking exclusively to TIMES NOW has made it very clear that he is not mediating for the N-deal. In fact, Pawar even says that his meeting with Sonia Gandhi was not over the N-deal but over other issues.
When asked whether there was any compromise formula worked out with the Left, Pawar replied that he was not dealing with the subject.
Sharad Pawar also made clear that he didn't meet the Prime Minister over this issue.
When questioned whether UPA's allies were confident since there won't be any early elections, Pawar replied that he was not contesting and so he was not worried about the elections.

Yesterday 27th June 2008, star cast of DESHDROHI, Gracy Singh, Roza, Kamaal Khan, Salim Gaud, and J.K.Jeswani was there in Hotel Crowne Plaza, New Delhi for the music launch of the movie. The music was launched by Mr.D.P.Yadav.
The song of the movie is sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Shareya Ghoshal, Khushboo Jain, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Shweta Pandit and Zubeen Garg . There are 10 tracks in the movie with 1 item number.
The lyrics are written by Kamaal Khan, Vimal Kashyap, and Sahil Fatehpuri.
All tracks are quite different; some are romantic, sad, item numbers etc. Music is good and catchy. Audience will like it.
While talking to Kamaal Khan he told us that movie is all about loving your country. One who loves his/her country will watch this movie. He said that the story is very close to his heart. He said, he is planning to make his next movie on Aarushi murder case very soon.
In our interaction with Roza Catalano she said, 'I am feeling very glad by my performance. I am learning Hindi and talking acting classes so that i can give my best, as in bollywood it is very essential to know hindi.Iam also searching for good Hindi teacher so that I can learn faster. Iam having some projects in hand but things are yet to be finalized.
Gracy Singh said that she is very existed about the movie launch and is also waiting for her further movie projects to be released. It is a totally a different role from a previous character which she had played like in Lagan she was a village girl ,in Gaganjal a house wife etc. it was a new and learning experience .
Later in the night there was a page3 party. Gracy, kamaal & roza enjoyed the party Gracy went a bit early and Rosa was there for a longer while she was very sweet with hotel guest who were talking to here and also got photo clicked with fan. When asked about her relationship with saif she said it's all about the star and luck. Neither his nor min life is going to end he found someone else and I to will find. Everyone enjoyed a lot.

People sometimes send me their poems for my opinion and of late I have received a number of poems from a young man who lives in New Delhi, India. They are of a high quality, especially bearing in mind that his first language is Hindi - not that his talent needs any qualification from me. It is apparent in every line. He sent me this poem 'Coda' just a day or two ago and I was so struck by it that I have made a reading to share with friends on You Tube. He has not told me his real name and I know him only by the pseudonym 'Snug'
Coda is a very good poem and I find the language very moving. Snug has a great feel for language, by which I mean that his language is something like a physical presence, immediate. The images in the poem are also immediate and often, in his poetry, I feel what he means even without actually knowing always exactly what he is attempting to say. One cannot do better than this for poetic immediacy.
'Incipient desire is memory's muse' is a beautiful line.And his poetry (what I have so far seen of it) seems shot through with melancholy, like all the best poetry.
CODA
'The serene sky lost into the night.'
My eyes on which you put your fingers are fingers.
Fingers which roll the uneven memory
Surpass trajectory and become oblivion.
And return oblique from light to darkness-
Not oblivious.
Darkness and love floors the heart-
Incipient desire is memory's muse-
As willing and unwilling failings
Abide the bittersweet tear and dew.
'Tardiness is washing me up as I smell the gunpowder.'
Ah! Violence has failed me.
I must step inside the well and contemplate.
Water is heavy as I.
Inside the well we had met
Astounded by a razor's nakedness-
Time was trundled on water
And the sky delved into a tub
Like a pail full of deep dolor
The way we live-
Looking through a dismantled piece's lens-
Dreary out its window-
A basic of all glass.

DESHDROHI
It's about loving your country
Yesterday 27th June 2008, star cast of DESHDROHI, Gracy Singh, Roza, Kamaal Khan, Salim Gaud, and J.K.Jeswani was there in Hotel Crowne Plaza, New Delhi for the music launch of the movie. The music was launched by Mr.D.P.Yadav.
The song of the movie is sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Shareya Ghoshal, Khushboo Jain, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Shweta Pandit and Zubeen Garg . There are 10 tracks in the movie with 1 item number.
The lyrics are written by Kamaal Khan, Vimal Kashyap, and Sahil Fatehpuri.
All tracks are quite different; some are romantic, sad, item numbers etc. Music is good and catchy. Audience will like it.
While talking to Kamaal Khan he told us that movie is all about loving your country. One who loves his/her country will watch this movie. He said that the story is very close to his heart. He said, he is planning to make his next movie on Aarushi murder case very soon.
In our interaction with Roza Catalano she said, 'I am feeling very glad by my performance. I am learning Hindi and talking acting classes so that i can give my best, as in bollywood it is very essential to know hindi.Iam also searching for good Hindi teacher so that I can learn faster. Iam having some projects in hand but things are yet to be finalized.
Gracy Singh said that she is very existed about the movie launch and is also waiting for her further movie projects to be released. It is a totally a different role from a previous character which she had played like in Lagan she was a village girl ,in Gaganjal a house wife etc. it was a new and learning experience .
Later in the night there was a page3 party. Gracy, kamaal & roza enjoyed the party Gracy went a bit early and Rosa was there for a longer while she was very sweet with hotel guest who were talking to here and also got photo clicked with fan. When asked about her relationship with saif she said it's all about the star and luck. Neither his nor min life is going to end he found someone else and I to will find. Everyone enjoyed a lot.
